About the Taxidermist
Hi, I’m Delmar Burkholder, owner and operator of Burkholder’s Wildlife Studio. Ever since I can remember I have dreamed about becoming a taxidermist. As a kid I collected and played with anything from mouse skulls to skunk tails and every thing in between. One time I almost got kicked out of the house for skinning a black duck on our kitchen table! I later attempted to mount the duck, but had very negative results. When I was 8 years old I did my first actual mount, which was a ring-neck pheasant that I accidentally caught in a raccoon trap. The only real supplies I had were glass eyes and some clay I bummed off a local taxidermist. Everything else I made out of old yarn and some wire I found laying around. Believe it or not when it was done it looked very much alive again, which helped spur my dream one step to reality?
Over the next several years I mounted many more things including deer, bear, fish, ducks, and various other specimens. Soon I realized it was time to expand my knowledge and education, so when I was 17, I attended Northwood School of Taxidermy, operated by master taxidermist and instructor Joel Zimmerman. In the summer of 2005, I passed the required state test to become a licensed taxidermist. Ever since, I have strived through hard work and ongoing education to become the best taxidermist I can possibly be.
